Waweru is a second born in a family of five. Growing in Kiandutu slum in Kenya, he faced a difficult childhood. Living in a rented single-roomed house, the family struggled to have access to quality sanitation and also fetched water from a community well. There was no compound or playground for the children to play in.
Without
a stable income for the family, food was scarce and they
often went to sleep on empty stomach. This economic hurdle made access to
education a far-fetched dream for Waweru and his siblings. He was often sent
away from school due to accumulating fees arrears. In an effort to survive,
Waweru took up casual jobs, but the work was exhausting and the income barely
sufficient.
“I engaged in casual jobs to help sustain my
upkeep but it was tiresome and not enough. Eventually, the situation forced me to
move to the streets and start begging. Life on the streets was harsh because
there was no food, no shelter and no security,” he recalled.
Waweru’s life took a
turning point when he encountered with Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC)
through a friend who had been requested by a parent to search for their missing
son. The friend suggested to search for him at the organization’s Temporary
Rescue Center (TRC). Waweru took the chance to ask for help and was given the
opportunity to join the AfCiC’s rehabilitation program.

Action for Children in Conflict is a non-governmental organization that aims at offering equal and sustainable opportunities to children and particularly to street-connected families. AfCiC stepped in and provided him with basic necessities, education, counselling and guidance. This support marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
“The support has changed
my status in education and my living conditions have become better,” Waweru narrated
happily.
Today, Waweru is proud of how far he has come and is optimistic for a better future. He dreams of succeeding in education and later venture into business. He also aspires to advocate for better living environment for the vulnerable children in the society. As he reflects back upon his earlier life, he encourages us to push on amid adversities.

“No matter the situation, keep going. I thank AfCiC for the unwavering support. God bless you,’ he concluded.
Waweru’s story is a
powerful reminder that no matter the circumstances, resilience and the right
support can pave the way for transformation. His journey inspires that even in
the darkest moments, a brighter future is possible with perseverance.
