UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY 2020

In many societies, children are often labeled “the leaders of tomorrow.” This is a good ideal for propagating the successful existence of society.

“Investing in our future means investing in our children.” Today is Universal Children’s Day. As we celebrate children and the numero us benefits they bring to society, we should pledge ourselves to help them achieve their immense potential. Some facts about this day In 1954, the United Nations established the Universal Children’s Day with an annual date of 20th November. On November 20, 1959, United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. 20, November 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In many societies, children are often labeled “the leaders of tomorrow.” This is a good ideal for propagating the successful existence of society. However, there is often a disconnection between verbal articulation of the ideal and translating it into action. This year’s celebration is a challenge to contribute practically to the improvement of the welfare of the child. Under the theme “Investing in our future means investing in our children,” we should endeavor to ensure that our children have a safe space to grow up in, with prospects for greatness in future. At AfCiC, we greatly believe in this possibility as espoused in our vision “A world of equal and sustainable opportunities for every Child” and work every day with partners and well-wishers towards it. Investing in our children is a continuous process. This investment takes many forms: Investment in education, health, social relations, spiritual growth, legislative framework to safeguard child rights etc. AfCiC is conscious of this and is always pumping resources, both human and material towards ensuring that the vulnerable children in the local communities within Kiambu, Nairobi, Murang’a and neighbouring counties get a chance at securing their future. We achieve this through investing in the following amongst other interventions:- A school nutrition support programme at St. Patrick Primary School Thika where students get a healthy lunch. This has helped boost the school retention and attendance rates. Rescuing and rehabilitating street children. Sponsoring students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Advocating for the rights of working children through the “Time To Talk” platform in collaboration with Kindernothilfe (KNH) and Terres des Hommes (TdH). This culminated in AfCiC participating in the C20 Summit 2020 held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 6th October 2020 to 9th October 2020 where working children gave their views before international policy-makers. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaA5TBcyZcM) Collaborating with the Education, Gender, Culture and Social Services Department-Kiambu County, National Police Service, Ministry of Education, National Gender and Equality Commission amongst other policy-making bodies to ensure that the rights of children are safeguarded. Offering legal aid to assist children who are in distress. We have been able to achieve this through the support of our generous partners and well-wishers who believe in the inborn ability of every child to achieve greatness regardless of background. The Covid-19 pandemic with its attendant challenges as a result of its effects, preventive and corrective measures instituted by various government agencies, private corporations, charitable organizations and individuals at personal level have severely impacted on the investments brought to bear on the challenges facing our children As the English poet Alexander Pope said, “Hope springs eternal.” Despite the challenges we still soldier on. Since the needs of the vulnerable children don’t take a day off, neither do we either. You can make a difference in a child’s life. You can support our work in various ways
