Climate Change As climate change is affecting every country on every continent, Kenya is no exception. As such, Kenya has in the last few years experienced changed weather patterns that have resulted in long periods of drought and erratic rainfalls that result floods hence in food shortages and food insecurity in the country. Therefore, the need for solutions that will reduce carbon emissions and increase adaptation efforts are eminent.
TREE PLANTING Action for Children thus recognizes this need and works with partners to support reforestation. AfCiC, in Collaboration with children from primary schools, former street children and members of the community undertake initiatives to plant trees.
RUNNING AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS Additionally, AfCiC runs awareness campaigns where the community is taught the value of recycling and keeping the environment clean. One of the programmes run by AfCiC is where street children collect garbage in town and its surroundings to keep the environment clean. The waste that can decompose is used to make compost manure, which is used for farming while plastic bags and bottles are recycled. Glass bottles are used for glass arts.
ENCOURAGING RECYCLING Electronic material, usually named as e-waste, is one of the fastest growing sections in the domestic solid waste water. Although almost 100% of e-waste is recyclable, the actual usage rate of e-waste is not likely. These items that can be retrieved from e-waste include ingredients , e.g., plastics, metals, and ice. Recycled art also known as eco friendly art, as it incorporates items such as plastics and metals that would otherwise sit in a landfill. At AfCiC the children are taught to create unique pieces of art made from everyday items such as plastic and metals that most people would simply throw away and not think twice about. The children are finding innovative ways to show their interest for the situation and therefore encouraging use, reduce and recycle for the better time. With material management posing a difficult environmental situation in Kenya, it is expected such initiatives would also encourage governments to take concrete actions to alleviate this situation.
